February 2010

Calvin Ray Aldridge, 79, of Stratford, Okla., died December 7, 2009. He married Maria F. Sanjur on June 16, 1969, in Panama. He served during the Cold War patrolling the Panama Canal. He retired as a sergeant with the Canal Zone Police force in February 1980. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Charles LaVerne Blystone, Sr., died December 14, 2009, in Augusta, Ga. He was born in the Canal Zone. He was a resident of Aiken, Ga., and was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority.

Adrien M. “Kibby” Bouché Jr., 86, died September 27, 2009 in Lehi, Utah. He went to the Canal Zone at the age of 3 months to live in Pedro Miguel. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1941, and earned a degree from Canal Zone Junior College. After marriage he lived for most of the next 31 years in the Canal Zone where he worked as a civilian for the Signal Corps, the Panama Railroad, the Fire Department, as a Canal Signalman, the Meteorological and Hydrographic Branch, and Marine Traffic Control.

Genevieve Ellen Brady, 86, of Columbia, S.C., died November 29, 2009. She arrived in the Canal Zone in August of 1956 and left September of 1974. She was active in scouting and church programs, and very active in the bridge world.

Alfreda “Freddie” Brandenburg, 79, of Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of Coco Solo, Canal Zone, died November 16, 2009. She was the widow of Dick “Brandy” Brandenburg.

Tula Brown, 64, of Hiram, Ga., died December 1, 2009. She was born and raised in the Canal Zone and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1963. She attended Canal Zone College and worked for the Customs Division. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society and was a frequent vendor at the Society’s annual reunions where she sold her photographic artwork.

Patricia Ann Catlin, 58, of Cibolo, Texas, died December 13, 2009. She was a registered nurse and worked in military hospitals and clinics in Okinawa, Germany, and Panama. In Panama, she met and married her husband Russell. They moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1992 where she continued to work until 2005.

Captain WK Morgan, 84, of Grovehill, Ala., died December 17, 2009. He worked for the Panama Canal Company as a pilot.

Louise Gloria Grote Munn, wife of former Canal Zone Police Officer George F. Munn, died January 27, 2010. She was born in Panama, R.P., graduated from the Pan-American Insstitute in 1952 and attended Canal Zone College. She worked for the U.S.Air Force at the Caribbean Air Command and Albrook and Howard Air Force bases until 1982. She was a member of the Panama Canal Company.

Ruth Irene Brown O’Neal, 88, died October 25, 2009. She lived with her husband in the Panama Canal Zone as a military family, and then as a PanCanal family until he retired in 1974. Early in their marriage she worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Panama. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Albert F. Pate, 85, died January 12, 2010, in San Diego, Calif. Al worked his way up the ranks with the Locks Division at Gatun to finally having the position as Operations Supervisor for the Atlantic Locks. He retired in 1975 with 42 years service. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society of which he was President in 1982-83.

Charles Alton Cavanaugh Jr., 83, died November 16, 2009. He retired from the Panama Canal Company in 1980 after 26 years of service as a locomotive operator. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Captain Edmund P. (Phil) Gabrieldied in Pensacola, Fla., on January 22, 2010.. He had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He retired in 1987 from the Panama Canal where he held several positions, including Panama Canal Pilot, Assistant Port Captain, and Chairman of the Board of Local Inspectors.

Margarita R. Gibbs, 70, of Brandon, Fla., died November 4, 2009. Since leaving the Republic of Panama in 1989, she retired from the U.S. Marshals Service in 2007 and spent time traveling. She made her last trip home to Panama in 2008. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jackie Gilbert, 81, of San Antonio, Texas, died December 27, 2009. She went to the Canal Zone in 1940 with her family, graduated from Cristobal High School, and was a Vital Statistics Clerk for the Canal Zone Government. After leaving the Zone she worked for the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital until her retirement in January 1985.

William J. Gilbert, Sr., 79, of Virginia Beach, Va., died December 12, 2009. He was born in the Canal Zone, and retired after 34 years of service as Harbor Master for the Panama Canal Company.

Lt. Col. Michael C. Kilgore, USAR (Ret.), died February 2, 2009. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1972 and from Washington State University in 1978 and received his commission in the U.S. Army. He left active duty in 1986 and went to work for Honeywell.

Elaine Sullivan Larkin, 83, died November 30, 2009, in Irvine, Calif. She was born in the Canal Zone, and she moved to Arcadia in 1944 following her graduation from Cristobal High School. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Captain Robert (Bob) Lee Mc Auslin, 87, died November 5, 2009. In 1966 he and his family moved to the Canal Zone. He was a tugboat captain from 1966-1969. In November 1969 he became a Panama Canal Ship Pilot and retired in April 1984. 

Captain Gerard Petroni, 74, died December 31, 2009. In 1977 Gerard was accepted as a Pilot-in-training by the Panama Canal Company and would work on the Canal until 2001. During this time he was a senior pilot, served 2.5 years as Captain of the Port, and was sent on Top Secret missions with the Special Forces and the Navy Seals in El Salvador and Honduras. From 1977-2001, the family lived in Gatun. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ellen Lamar Thomas, 95, of Lenox, Mass., died May 22, 2008. She was a graduate of St. Petersburg, Fla., high school where her best friend was the late Marie Weir, who taught biology and was Girls’ Advisor at Balboa High School. She taught journalism and English in Florida and in the Canal Zone and was faculty sponsor for the Zonian for the Balboa High School Class of 1951, then became a reading specialist.

Captain Roley J. Wesley, 85, of Washington, N.C., died January 4, 2010. He was a Sea Captain prior to working in the Panama Canal Zone. He retired as a Panama Canal pilot with 29 years of service.

Michael “Mike” Edward Zimmerman, 73, of Salem, Ore., died December 16, 2009. He moved to the Canal Zone at the age of 10 with his family where he lived until 1964. During his post-collegiate time in Panama, he was employed by the U.S. Navy. He returned to Oregon in 1964 and remained employed there until his retirement in 1993.

March 2010

Samuel C. Beckley, 73, of Oakfield, N.Y., died March 10, 2010. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from Balboa High School in 1955 and later graduated from Canal Zone Junior College. He was a food technologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Seattle until retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Kathleen (Steiner) Bennett, 71, of Sunnyvale and Oceanside, Calif., died February 2, 2010. She was born in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1956. She married her first husband Tony Dyer in the Canal Zone and they eventually settled in California. She later met and married her second husband who was a United Airlines pilot. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Martha Marie Browder, 102, of Potomac Falls, Va., died January 3, 2010. She was born in 1907 and moved to California at the age of five where she later met her husband and graduated from high school. She went to UCLA and taught in La Brea, Calif., before relocating to the Canal Zone for over 37 years. She taught for 11 years in the Canal Zone until her husband’s retirement. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Stapleton Dalton, 97, died March 1, 2010, in Pinehurst, N.C. She was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., and grew up in the Canal Zone where she graduated from Balboa High School in 1930. She had a long career as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army, and she and her second husband Gordon Dalton had a travel agency in the Republic of Panama. She retired in 1973 and moved to Pinehurst. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Stanley Eccles, 89, died February 20, 2010 in Henderson, Nev. He was born in Mount Kisco, N.Y., and worked as a Towing Locomotive (Mule) Operator for the Panama Canal and retired in Panama. He later moved to Henderson to live with family.

Anne Elizabeth Edwards Hale, 79, died February 8, 2010 at her granddaughter’s home in Merritt Island, Fla. She was born in Petersburg, Va., and moved to the Canal Zone at the age of seven. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1948 and returned to the United States in 1975 and lived in Texas and Florida.

Jean de Garmo Imparato of Belleair, Fla., died February 6, 2010. She moved to Belleair from Albrook AFB Base in the Canal Zone in 1961. She was the widow of Col. Edward T. Imparato

Albert G. Lane, of Clearwater, Fla., died March 14, 2010. Born into a military family, he lived in Panama as a youth and served 30 years in the U.S. Army before retiring as a Colonel at West Point, N.Y.

Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Moffitt, 85, of Berkeley, Calif., died February 1, 2010 in Los Altos. She moved to Panama as a teenager, graduated from Balboa High School in 1942, Canal Zone Junior College in 1944, and Ohio State University in 1946. She married her husband Frank in 1946 whom she had met earlier while he was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Panama.

Mary N. Overstreet, 77, of Spring Hill, Tenn., died February 23, 2010. She was employed at Coco Solo Hospital as a nurse. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

John Robert Smith, 97, died March 5, 2010 in Sarasota, Fla. He was born in Culebra, Panama Canal Zone, graduated from Balboa High School in 1932 and Iowa State University. He was an electrical engineer for the Panama Canal Company for over 30 years until he retired in 1969. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Edna (Marwood) Wertz, 101, died January 2, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas. She married George Wertz who worked for the Electrical Division in the Canal Zone. They retired in 1970 and moved to Ozona, Fla., where she lived until 1995 when she moved to San Antonio.

July 2010

Gloria C. Burgoon, 85, of Dothan, Ala., died May 23, 2010 at home. She was born September 18, 1924 in the Republic of Panama and was employed with the U.S. Air Force as a Civil Engineer for thirty-seven years prior to retirement in 1979. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jacqueline J. Cahue, 75, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died May 27, 2010, at Carrington Place Nursing Home. She and her late husband Dr. Aldo E. Cahue traveled to the Canal Zone in Panama during the course of his psychiatric career.

Robert W. "Bob" Clarihew, 73, died February 19, 2010, in Pinellas Park, Fla. He was a cable splicer for General Telephone before going to the Canal Zone in 1970. He worked in the Electrical Division and left in 1975 after being injured. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Pamela R. (Hawthorne) Coloski, 73, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died May 7, 2010. She was a 1955 graduate of Cristobal High School and a member of the Panama Canal Society.

William Reed Graham died at home in Kerrville, Texas, on May 19, 2010. He was born in Colon, R.P., on December 14, 1917. He was a Canal Zone policeman for 10 years and then transferred to other employment. He retired in 1972 from the Panama Railroad. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Kevin J. Joyce, 46, of Jacksonville, Fla., died March 1, 2010. He was born in the Canal Zone to William and Mildred Joyce and graduated from Balboa High School in 1982. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jean Holmelin Kirk, 87, died April 14, 2010, in Springfield, Ohio. She was raised in Cristobal, Canal Zone, and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1940. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Alcinda B. (Atkins) Lanning, 62, of Mayport, Fla., died May 7, 2009. She was raised in Curundu, Canal Zone, and graduated from Balboa High School in 1966. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Mary Griffin Lynch, 93, of Tampa, Fla., died May 10, 2010. She was born in Panama in 1917 and graduated from Cristobal High School. She worked for many years for the Accounting Division of the Panama Canal Company and retired in 1971. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Vivian Murphy Mikulich died June 2, 2010, in Everett, Wash. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1951 with her husband where she taught fifth grade at Balboa Elementary School for many years. She retired in 1974 and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Albert "Ray" Moore, 87, of Seminole, Fla., died May 6, 2010. He worked for AT&T Long Lines for 41 years in Louisiana, Tennessee, Panama and New Jersey before retiring to Florida in 1984. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Margarita "Cecilia" Kant de Nicolaisen, 92, died April 23, 2010, in Las Cumbres, Panama. She was born on her family coffee farm in Chiriqui, R.P. Her family helped make Boquete one of the great coffee-producing regions of Panama. When her late husband Andreas Nicolaisen retired from the Panama Canal, she moved to Kerrville, Texas, then Houston, Texas, and finally back to Panama.

Hal Christian "Speed" Robertson, Jr., 77, died September 14, 2009. He was born in the Canal Zone and at the age of 14 moved to the Atlanta area in 1946. He retired from Equifax after a successful 40-year career. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Charles John Tobin, Sr., 66, of Orange Park, Fla., died May 3, 2010. He moved in 1990 from the Republic of Panama. He was a local member of the VFW and the Loyal Order of the Moose in the Republic of Panama.

Annie Torbert Wainio, 95, died on December 12, 2009, in Cardenas, R.P. She was born June 18, 1914, the same year the Canal opened, and graduated from Balboa High School in 1931. She worked for 11 years for the U.S. Embassy in Panama, then worked for the U.S. Army and retired as a Translater for G2 in Fort Amador in 1973. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

September 2010

Florence Wileman "Bobbi" Adair, 91, of Clearwater, Fla., died July 26, 2010. She was born in the Canal Zone in 1919 and spent her early childhood years there.

Beth E. Baker, 51, died May 6, 2010. She went to the Canal Zone at an early age and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1976. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Anna McCall Buchter, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., died July 11, 2010. After graduating from nursing school she went to work as a nurse in the Canal Zone. She returned to the U.S. to marry her husband and again returned to the Canal Zone to work in many areas of Gorgas Hospital until she retired in 1983. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Gerald (Jerry) W. Coffey, 74, died June 11, 2010, at his home in Diablo. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1954 and the University of Miami in 1958. After serving in the Army for two years, he returned to the Canal Zone to work for Marine Traffic Control until 1988. He was an avid fisherman and skin diver.

Leonidas A. "Leo" Constantino, 75, of Missouri City, Texas, died April 12, 2010. He was born in Cristobal and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1953. He received his BS in Engineering and was involved in the petrochemical industry for over 50 years. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Alice E. (Kenney) Forsstrom, 88, of East Greenwich, R.I., died April 14, 2010. She was the widow of the late William W. Forsstrom to whom she was married for 63 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Captain Alvin L. Gallin, USN (Ret), 89, died July 13, 2010 in Titusville, Fla. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in December 1941. He served during World War II and many years in Naval service. His last tour was as Maritime Director Panama Canal from which he retired from Naval service to work for the Panama Canal Company prior to the treaty with the Republic of Panama. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Patrick Lewis Parker, 47, of Clearwater, Fla., died April 19, 2010. He was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, the son of military parents.

Charles Propst, 67, of Oxford, Ala., died May 28, 2010. In 1972 he drove from West Virginia to Panama via the Pan American Highway for a vacation. He ended up working at the Canal Zone Mental Health Center in Corozal, later transferring to Gorgas Hospital Social Work Service. He retired in 1995 as Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Doris "Dotty" Ruth (Hale) Sanders, 89, died June 18, 2010, in Fort Myers, Fla. She was born in Ancon Hospital and married the late Irl R. Sanders, Jr., in 1939. She was a master bridge player, an active member of her civic council, enjoyed golf and swimming, and worked at the Naval Station in Coco Solo. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Eleanor Skibicki, 67, died May 28, 2010 in Dover, Del. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1959 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1961. After high school, she moved back to Delaware where she met and married her husband.

Laurel B. Griffin, 54, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., died August 6, 2010. She was born and raised in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1973. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Freeland R. Hollowell, Sr., 86, died April 10, 2010 in Dothan, Ala. He was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, and graduated from Balboa High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. After the military, he worked as a Canal Zone Police Officer for 13 years. In 1961 he transferred to the Motor Transportation Division where he retired as a General Foreman in 1979. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America in Balboa, the Annual Cayuco Races, and coached Little League Baseball. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Sandra (Dunning) Ingle, 70, died June 16, 2010 in Bradenton, Fla. She grew up in Pedro Miguel and Balboa and graduated from Balboa High School in 1958. She moved to Tampa, Fla., in 1960 and worked for several years before becoming a nursing caregiver.

Ivan Klasovsky, 63, died April 18, 2010 in Miami, Fla. Originally from the Atlantic side, he was the former Chief of Plans and Property Branch, Directorate of Engineering and Housing, USARSO. He was one of the key personnel in the planning and execution of base closure and transfer of Army real property to Panama.

Carol George Kuehn, 73, of New Holland, Pa., died April 12, 2010. She was a 1954 graduate of Cristobal High School and attended Canal Zone Junior College for two years. She met and married her husband while he was stationed with the Army in the Canal Zone, and she later worked for the Dupont Co. in Wilmington, Del.

Anita J. (Catanzaro) Oberholtzer, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., died July 15, 2010. She moved to Panama at the age of 14 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1947. For many years she was the owner and operator of the Fort Gulick Nursery School. She was also a Ham Radio Operator and started a computer prayernet ministry known as the St. Mary's Prayernet. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Mary Ellen Taylor (Williams) died July 1, 2010. She lived and raised her children in the Panama Canal Zone.

William R. Thrift, 67, of Hayesville, N.C., died June 28, 2010. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1961 and worked for 18 years in the Panama Canal Zone as a police officer and retired in 1982. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jane Compton Wagenbrenner, 76, of Cumming, Ga., died July 13, 2010. She was born in Colon, Panama, and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1951. She was a graduate of Dickinson College of Carlisle, Pa., attended Kansas University for graduate school, and Hofstra College on Long Island, N.Y. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Stacia Marie Walsh, 91, of Lutz, Fla., died August 1, 2010 in Zephyrhills, Fla. She was a retired Registered Nurse from the Panama Canal Zone. She worked at Coco Solo Hospital, Gorgas Hospital, the Margarita Aid Station, and at Fort Gulick. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

November 2010

Robert Dodge Atwood, 90, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died on October 27, 2010. He was born in Bocas del Toro, Panama, where his father was a manager with United Fruit Co. Shortly after his birth, the family moved back to St. Petersburg.

Leo A. Austin, Sr., 62, of Land O'Lakes, Fla., died November 4, 2009. He was born in Panama on August 8, 1947 and lived in the Canal Zone until he joined the U.S. Navy. He returned to Panama and worked for the Panama Canal for 33 years in the Maintenance Division. He retired in 1993. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

William Herbert "Herb" Breaden, M/Sgt., USAF (Ret.), 81, died August 30, 2010 after an extended illness. Herb retired from the U.S. Air Force after 27 years and began a second career with the Panama Canal Commission in the Canal Zone and New Orleans, La. He retired with over 50 years government service, and moved to San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Dell Gates Carlson, 89, wife of Captain John Gage Carlson, died September 16, 2010 in Wareham, Mass. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1953 with her husband and three children. She taught Sunday School at Balboa Union Church and was a Sea Scouts leader. She and Captqain Carlson moved to Marion, Mass., in 1975 when he retired.

Emma Louise Clarke, 85, died October 15, 2010 in St. Petersburg, Fla. She married her husband Howard Linden Clarke on May 21, 1971 in Margarita, Canal Zone. When they retired in 1973 they moved to St. Petersburg. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Edith Margaret Davis, 94, died August 27, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. She went to the Canal Zone when her late husband Gilbert was hired by the Maintenance Division. While in the Canal Zone, she taught 4th and 5th grades in Diablo and Los Rios schools.

Norma Deaton, 80, died September 2, 2010. She was born in the Canal Zone. She was a substitute teacher in Fairburn, Ga., owned a daycare, and worked at H&R Block. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Marie Jenkins-Everett died September 7, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Panama in 1937 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1955. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Betty Fetherston of Gretna, La., died August 13, 2010 in McHenry, Ill., of cancer. Betty went to the Canal Zone as the wife of a Panama Canal pilot. She worked as a nurse in Coco Solo Health Center, Margarita Health Center, Coco Solo Hospital/Clinic.

Eddie Blake Goodrich, 86, died April 20, 2010 of Alzheimer's Disease in Sun City Center, Fla. He was a WW II combat veteran, graduated from Georgia Tech, and in 1953 was hired by the Panama Canal Company to work on the 60-cycle conversion project. He retired on April 17, 1980 as Chief of the Special Projects Branch in the Engineering Division. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Arlene Elizabeth Greene, 87, died September 12, 2010. After service in WWII, she worked as a nurse at Gorgas Hospital and married her late husband Ed in 1947. In 1979, she moved back to the U.S. to live with her son Richard. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Colleen R. Greer, 51, of San Antonio, Texas, died October 5, 2010 after a motorcycle accident three days earlier. She was married to Barry Greer (CHS'69) and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jean C. Heddeaus, 87, died August 17, 2010 in Davie, Fla. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1941 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1945 and later Canal Zone College. She married Robert Heddeaus in 1949. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Bessie Lee "Babe" Heilman died August 13, 2010 after a two-year battle with cancer. Babe was born in Ancon and graduated from Balboa High School in 1939. She worked at Gorgas Hospital in various positions. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Kathleen A. Ryan Hopkins died September 16, 2010 from cancer. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1956 and worked for FAA until she left in 1973.

Doris Hutchison, 93, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died April 6, 2010. She graduated from Balboa High School and worked for the Commissary Division until 1950.

Marcie Ellen Jones, 86, died September 29, 2010 in Granbury, Texas. She went to the Canal Zone in 1963 and served as a public health nurse for 18 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Henry A. Lawrence, 76, died April 27, 2010 in Louisville, Ky. He went to the Canal Zone in 1940, attended Canal Zone schools and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1952. He earned an apprenticeship and worked in the Canal Zone until he was drafted during the Korean War.

Candice Lotterhos, 37, died May 12, 2010 from melanoma. She was the daughter-in-law of members Penny and Joe Lotterhos of Clinton, Miss.

JoAnne Mitchell, 67, died May 8, 2010. She married her husband Jerry Brees in 1985 when they worked together in Panama.

William J. M. Monsanto, 86, of Santa Ana, Calif., died September 13, 2010. Born in the Canal Zone he moved to Los Angeles to attend USC where he graduated in 1947.

Alice Ruth (Pierce) Nail, 90, of Rogers, Ark., died September 15, 2010. She lived in the Canal Zone until 1964. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society and a former reporter for the Canal Record for NW Arkansas.

Eileen J. Owen, of Woodlinville, Wash., died June 2, 2010. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Peter N. Reitz, 56, died August 21, 2010 in New York City of cancer. He was born in David, Chiriqui, to Methodist ministers to Panama. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1973 and was a longtime stagecraft electrician on Broadway.

Peggy Ann Roberts, 88, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died July 30, 2010. In 1960 she and her husband Floyd moved to the Canal Zone. She was a past President of the Gamboa Women's Club, an avid bridge player, and tennis player. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Betty Fetherston of Gretna, La., died August 13, 2010 in McHenry, Ill., of cancer. Betty went to the Canal Zone as the wife of a Panama Canal pilot. She worked as a nurse in Coco Solo Health Center, Margarita Health Center, Coco Solo Hospital/Clinic.

Eddie Blake Goodrich, 86, died April 20, 2010 of Alzheimer's Disease in Sun City Center, Fla. He was a WW II combat veteran, graduated from Georgia Tech, and in 1953 was hired by the Panama Canal Company to work on the 60-cycle conversion project. He retired on April 17, 1980 as Chief of the Special Projects Branch in the Engineering Division. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Arlene Elizabeth Greene, 87, died September 12, 2010. After service in WWII, she worked as a nurse at Gorgas Hospital and married her late husband Ed in 1947. In 1979, she moved back to the U.S. to live with her son Richard. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Colleen R. Greer, 51, of San Antonio, Texas, died October 5, 2010 after a motorcycle accident three days earlier. She was married to Barry Greer (CHS'69) and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jean C. Heddeaus, 87, died August 17, 2010 in Davie, Fla. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1941 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1945 and later Canal Zone College. She married Robert Heddeaus in 1949. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Bessie Lee "Babe" Heilman died August 13, 2010 after a two-year battle with cancer. Babe was born in Ancon and graduated from Balboa High School in 1939. She worked at Gorgas Hospital in various positions. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Kathleen A. Ryan Hopkins died September 16, 2010 from cancer. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1956 and worked for FAA until she left in 1973.

Doris Hutchison, 93, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died April 6, 2010. She graduated from Balboa High School and worked for the Commissary Division until 1950.

Marcie Ellen Jones, 86, died September 29, 2010 in Granbury, Texas. She went to the Canal Zone in 1963 and served as a public health nurse for 18 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Henry A. Lawrence, 76, died April 27, 2010 in Louisville, Ky. He went to the Canal Zone in 1940, attended Canal Zone schools and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1952. He earned an apprenticeship and worked in the Canal Zone until he was drafted during the Korean War.

Candice Lotterhos, 37, died May 12, 2010 from melanoma. She was the daughter-in-law of members Penny and Joe Lotterhos of Clinton, Miss.

JoAnne Mitchell, 67, died May 8, 2010. She married her husband Jerry Brees in 1985 when they worked together in Panama.

William J. M. Monsanto, 86, of Santa Ana, Calif., died September 13, 2010. Born in the Canal Zone he moved to Los Angeles to attend USC where he graduated in 1947.

He was born in Gorgas Hospital, graduated from Balboa High School in 1967, and retired after 34 years service in 2000. He worked another 10 years as Chief of the Instrument Repair Shop under the Panama Canal Authority. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Joseph V. Stagi, 79, of Tampa, Fla., died on October 27, 2010 after a long illness. He was a member of the 71st Army Band in the Panama Canal Zone during the early 1950s.

Perry Earl "Trux" Truxton, 82, died October 11, 2010 in Alamogordo, N.M. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Carol Carr Walton, 47, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died August 12, 2010 of cancer. She was the daughter of member Janice T. Carr and the late Alvis B. Carr, Jr.

Alfred F. West, 85, of Lexington, S.C., died August 25, 2010. He was a machinist in the Canal Zone and retired on December 31, 1981 from the Maintenance Division. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Matthew J. Wilder, 67, of Lutz, Fla., died October 12, 2010. He was formerly from Panama, R.P. He was the son of member Matthew J. Wilder, Sr.

John A. "Jack" Willoughby, 70, of Merritt Island, Fla., died January 19, 2010. He grew up in Gatun and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1958. After a 30-year career teaching wood shop, industrial arts and geography in the U.S. and the Canal Zone, he retired in 1999. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Charlotte Cain Wilson, 50, daughter of members Lois (Scheidegg) and Kyle Andress, died September 8, 2010. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1978 and lived in Baton Rouge, La.

William (Bill) E. Zemer, Jr., 87, died August 26, 2010 in Hartwell, Ga. He was born in Ancon Hospital, graduated from Balboa High School in 1941 and was a member of the Red, White and Blue Troupe. After graduating from Ohio State, he was the Balboa High School swimming coach. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Rolf C. Arndt, 78, of Dunnellon, Fla., died October 3, 2010 at Life Care Center of Citrus County. He met and married his wife, Joan Dian Powell, while in Panama in 1955 and they moved to Connecticut. He worked for 37 years in Connecticut and retired in 1993 to Dunnellon. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

John L. Brown, 70, died November 25, 2010. He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in the Canal Zone and subsequently a Canal Zone Police Officer. He was also a graduate of Florida State University, Panama Canal Zone. While in the Canal Zone, he was recruited for the U.S. Marshals Service where he retired after 25 years.

Jean Darel Burns, 82, retired Engineer, died November 10, 2010, in Tulsa, Okla. He worked as an engineer for Boeing, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Panama Canal Co. He was well known in the Canal Zone for his portrayal of Santa Claus for 30 years. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Thomas Benjamin Halliday, 93, died November 2, 2010. He went to the Canal Zone with his parents and graduated from Balboa High School in 1935. He was an electrician for the Panama Canal Company until his retirement. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jose Ramon "Joe" Hernandez, TSgt., USAF Ret., 76, of Tampa, Fla., died November 27, 2010. He was an aircraft instructor for the Inter-American Air Force Academy for Latin American Countries at Albrook AFB, Panama

Grayce "Lydia" Nadeau, 91, died November 15, 2010 in College Station, Texas. She went to the Canal Zone when she was three years old and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1936. She worked in the General Counsel's Office of the Panama Canal Company until she retired in 1978. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Constance Ella (Hayden) Norris died May 18, 2010. She went to the Canal Zone in 1924 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1938. She worked as a recreation specialist with the Canal Zone Schools Division at Gamboa Elementary, Diablo Gym, and Balboa Elementary. She retired in 1989 with 33 years of service.

Charles (Chuck) Raymond Soukup, 83, was slain on October 25, 2010. After serving in the U.S. Air Force at Albrook AFB, he returned to Panama and began work as a U. S. Customs agent and continued to do so until he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Franklin Stewart "Mooney" Stablerdied November 21, 2010, in Orlando, Fla., following open-heart surgery. He was born in Colon, R.P., and spent his youth growing up in Curundu, Canal Zone. He went to work for the Panama Canal Company after serving in the Air Force. He moved to San Diego, Calif., and was a U. S. Immigration Officer until 1996. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Helen "Marie" Westover, 84, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died November 23, 2010. She was born in the Panama Canal Zone and moved to the Florida area in 1973.
